Getting scammed used to feel like a bureaucratic nightmare. You had to rush to a police station, file a report, take that paper to the bank, and hope the money had not already moved to an offshore crypto wallet. The money often moved too fast.
To combat the rise of call center gangs and online fraud, Thailand introduced the Royal Decree on Measures for the Prevention and Suppression of Technology Crimes.
This law gives you, the victim, the power to stop a thief in their tracks. Save the critical numbers and links below in your phone, and bookmark our Bangkok travel guide if you travel here often.
The Old Way: You needed a police report before the bank would act. The New Law: You can freeze the account right away.
Under the Royal Decree, if you suspect you transferred money to a scammer, you have the legal right to call your bank or the recipient's bank and request a 72-hour freeze on the destination account.
You do not need a police report first. The bank must suspend the transaction immediately when you request the freeze, to prevent the funds from moving further.
The government created the Anti-Online Scam Operation Center, known as the AOC. The AOC operates 24 hours a day to fight digital fraud.
Have you seen posts on Facebook or Line offering "easy money" just for opening a bank account for someone else?
People who sold their bank accounts, known as "Mule Accounts" or Bunchee Ma, can no longer claim ignorance when law enforcement catches them. The Royal Decree removes that excuse.
Warn staff or friends: Never open a bank account for a stranger, no matter how much they pay.
Protections extend beyond traditional bank accounts. Thai-licensed digital asset operators, including exchanges and crypto wallets, must comply with the same freeze orders. If your money moves into a Thai crypto wallet, call 1441 to target those assets as well.
If you realise you have been scammed, act fast. Speed stops transfers.
Thailand's banking laws favour victims, but only if you act without delay. If you travel often, review our visa guidance and keep the numbers above saved.
