Long time expat in Thailand, loving the food and activities option Thailand has to offer.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand has signed a Letter of Intent to create the "Amazing Thailand Transfer Passenger Privilege", a program that will let eligible transit passengers access curated short-stay experiences during long layovers. The LOI was signed on 5 October 2026 with the Department of Airports and four aviation and tourism partners, and senior transport and tourism officials attended the ceremony.
Under the new cooperation framework TAT will work with airport and airline partners to offer transfer passengers the option to leave the airport and join pre-arranged tours, cultural activities, or short-stay packages during extended connections. The agreement, formalised on 5 October 2026, establishes the scheme as a priority project that aims to channel transit traffic into on-the-ground tourism opportunities. Government and agency representatives who attended the signing included Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, Deputy Minister of Transport Phattrapong Phattraprasit, Permanent Secretary for Tourism and Sports Natthriya Thaweevong, and Permanent Secretary Piyapong Jiwattanakulpaisarn.
If you travel through Thailand with a long connection you may be able to turn wait time into a quick city experience without arranging everything yourself. The programme aims to make short excursions easier to book and to coordinate transfers, luggage handling options, and simple entry procedures for eligible transit passengers. That could let you explore nearby attractions, try a local meal, or visit a temple during a single layover instead of staying airside. Before you travel check visa and entry rules. If you normally plan a quick stop in Bangkok consider transport and lodging that shorten transfer time, for example pick a hotel close to rail links. The programme is still in development under the LOI so you should not assume services are available yet. Use these practical steps when you want to plan a layover visit and to be ready once the scheme launches. First, build time buffers. Allow extra time for immigration, baggage reclaim or transfer, and any pre-booked activity. Second, confirm which airlines and airports participate before you commit to a connection that depends on the privilege. Third, choose storage or through-check options for luggage or select hotels that shorten ground travel. Our guides can help you pick efficient options and experiences. If you want fast transfers and minimal travel time check hotel options in 10 Bangkok Hotels Directly Connected to BTS/MRT Stations. If you favour a short mindful break consider nearby retreats in 4 English-Speaking Meditation Retreats Near Bangkok. If you prefer to explore local culture and streets, plan using practical local guidance such as Tattoo Studios on Khaosan Road for ideas about what short visits could include.
Do not rely on third-party arrangements that have not been confirmed by the airline or airport. When the programme details become public, book through official channels or partners listed by TAT to reduce the risk of cancelled transfers or denied entry. Expect step-by-step instructions on eligibility and booking once partners publish their operational plans.
