Mosaic-clad mountain temple in the clouds
Set on a misty mountain shoulder near Khao Kho, Wat Phra That Pha Sorn Kaew is a burst of color and calm. Millions of mosaic tiles cloak walkways and stupas in kaleidoscopic patterns, while a striking five-white-Buddha statue gazes over forested hills. Come in the cool season for the best chance of cloud seas and crisp views, and aim for early morning or late afternoon to avoid bus crowds and harsh light. Photographers should bring a polarizer to tame glare off the glassy mosaics. As with all temples, dress modestly, shoulders and knees covered, and move quietly around worshippers. Nearby viewpoints and cafes make this a slow-travel day, with easy detours to Khao Kho for sunset. Even on a Thailand veteran’s itinerary, this temple still surprises.
