BANGKOK (February 11, 2026) – A series of minor earthquakes struck Southern Thailand’s Surat Thani province on Wednesday morning, causing brief alarm among locals and tourists.

However, authorities have quickly stepped in to reassure the public that the popular tourist destinations of Khao Sok National Park and Cheow Lan Lake (Ratchaprapha Dam) remain completely safe and unaffected.

Here is everything you need to know about the situation if you are currently traveling in Southern Thailand.

What Happened?

According to the Earthquake Observation Division of the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD), a sequence of shallow, minor tremors occurred in Khao Phang Subdistrict, Ban Ta Khun District, Surat Thani, starting early Wednesday morning.

The cluster of tremors recorded on February 11 includes:

  • 08:58 AM: Magnitude 2.4 (Depth 1 km)
  • 09:12 AM: Magnitude 2.9 (Depth 1 km) – The strongest of the cluster
  • 09:14 AM: Magnitude 1.9 (Depth 1 km)
  • 09:58 AM: Magnitude 2.3 (Depth 3 km)
  • 12:26 PM: Magnitude 2.3 (Depth 1 km)

The tremors were caused by movements along the Khlong Marui fault line. Because the earthquakes were shallow, residents in the immediate epicenter felt slight vibrations. However, the magnitudes were very small, and no damage to property, injuries, or casualties have been reported.

Is Ratchaprapha Dam (Cheow Lan Lake) Safe?

Given that the epicenter in Ban Ta Khun is just 11 kilometers away from the massive Ratchaprapha Dam, the structure that holds back the iconic Cheow Lan Lake, tourist concerns are completely understandable.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) responded immediately. Officials, led by the Assistant Director of Ratchaprapha Dam, conducted a thorough visual inspection of the dam crest and evaluated data from their automated Dam Safety Remote Monitoring System (DS-RMS).

The official verdict: The dam is 100% secure. EGAT confirmed that the minor seismic activity had absolutely zero impact on the structural integrity of Ratchaprapha Dam, Bang Lang Dam, or any other facilities in the region.

Advice for Tourists and Travelers

If you are currently staying in a floating bungalow on Cheow Lan Lake, or if you have a trip planned to Khao Sok or the nearby Gulf Islands (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) this week, here is what you should know:

  1. Do Not Cancel Your Plans: There is no need to alter your travel itinerary. All national parks, boat tours, and resorts are operating normally.
  2. No Tsunami Threat: These were inland, minor tremors. There is absolutely zero risk of a tsunami.
  3. Stay Calm: Minor seismic activity from the Khlong Marui fault line is a known natural occurrence and is heavily monitored by Thai authorities.

The Land of Smiles remains as beautiful and safe as ever. Enjoy your trip to the South!
