Long time expat in Thailand, loving the food and activities option Thailand has to offer.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is inviting visitors to view the Royal Barge Procession rehearsals and the procession itself on the Chao Phraya River, with activities scheduled from 17 August 2026 to 6 November 2026. TAT is also promoting surf therapy and wellness experiences in Phuket and Phang-nga under its Healing Is the New Luxury campaign.
The Royal Barge Procession in Bangkok will include a series of rehearsals and the full ceremonial flotilla that leads to the Royal Kathin Ceremony at Wat Arun Ratchawararam. Organisers scheduled a set of 12 rehearsals ahead of the final events, offering multiple opportunities to observe this centuries-old royal ceremony on the Chao Phraya River. TAT ran media and creator activations in Phuket and Phang-nga to highlight Thailand Surf Therapy, connecting surfing, wellness and community-led experiences as part of the Healing Is the New Luxury campaign.
Travellers can time a Bangkok visit to catch rehearsal runs or the full procession between 17 August 2026 and 6 November 2026. Rehearsals can provide less-crowded viewing than main ceremonial days and make it easier to photograph the barges and oarsmen from riverbanks and public piers. Combine a cultural stay in Bangkok with coastal wellness options in the south: Phuket and Phang-nga feature surf therapy programs that pair guided surfing with recovery practices, ideal for travellers prioritising wellbeing.
If you want a broader read on Thailand’s cultural calendar and other major events to pair with a Bangkok visit, see A Guide to the 10 Most Popular Festivals in Thailand. For practical choices on where to base yourself in the capital for easy river access and transit, consult Most Convenient Areas to Live in Bangkok (BTS/MRT). After an evening on the river, explore food and nightlife options at Bangkok’s Best Night Markets.
Book river-facing rooms well in advance because hotels with Chao Phraya views sell out on key rehearsal and ceremony dates. Arrive at your chosen viewing spot at least 60 to 90 minutes before scheduled movement to secure a clear line of sight and avoid blocking public walkways. Bring a telephoto lens or a smartphone with optical zoom to capture the ornate barges from a distance.
Respect local protocols near temple sites, especially around Wat Arun Ratchawararam during the Royal Kathin Ceremony. Dress modestly for temple approaches and follow directions from event staff or authorities. If you plan to extend your trip to the Andaman Coast, consider booking surf therapy sessions or wellness retreats in Phuket and Phang-nga in advance.
